Un «patriota a su manera» cuenta la historia de Goldman Sachs «en cinco burbujas»
Matt Taibbi, collaborador habitual del periódico alternativo, Rolling Stone, se considera por muchos de sus paisanos como el niño bonito de la prensa alternativa norteamericana. En este artículo de 16 densas páginas Taibbi hace honor a su fama. Habla de las orígenes y las fortunas de Goldman Sachs, trazando su historia desde su creación en 1869 por Marcus Goldman, un inmigrante alemán, y su yerno, Samuel Sachs. Taibbi, que representa la otra cara de la moneda de los hinchas de Goldman Sachs, pretende resumir la historia en lo que él denomina «cinco burbujas», burbujas llenas de los gases fétidos de manipulación y fraude. Las herramientas de este periodista/niño bonito son la hipérbole y el lengüaje llano, sazonadas liberalmente con ironía y mala leche.
Este artículo de Taibbi para Rolling Stone empieza así: «The first thing you need to know about Goldman Sachs is that it’s everywhere. The world’s most powerful investment bank is a great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity, relentlessly jamming its blood funnel into anything that smells like money. In fact, the history of the recent financial crisis, which doubles as a history of the rapid decline and fall of the suddenly swindled dry American empire, reads like a Who’s Who of Goldman Sachs graduates.»
Y termina así: «It’s a gangster state, running on gangster economics, and even prices can’t be trusted anymore; there are hidden taxes in every buck you pay. And maybe we can’t stop it, but we should at least know where it’s all going.» En medio hay mucha miga bien documentada, y muchos puntos de reflexión.
